The best first step is to think about the feeling you want to create in a specific room. Before you even consider color or subject, ask yourself: do I want this space to feel calm and serene, or energetic and social? Thinking about the mood first will guide all your other choices and ensure you select a piece that doesn’t just decorate the wall, but truly enhances the purpose of the room.

The most common mistake is choosing art that is too small for the wall. A small print on a large wall can look like an afterthought and feel disconnected. A good rule of thumb for a main focal wall, like above a sofa or bed, is to choose a piece (or a set) that is about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. When in doubt, it’s almost always better to go a little larger.

For hanging above furniture (like a sofa, bed, or sideboard), choose art that is between 2/3 and 3/4 the width of the furniture. For a blank wall, a large statement piece should be substantial enough to anchor the space. A helpful trick is to use painter’s tape to outline the dimensions of the print on your wall. This allows you to step back and visualize the scale before you commit.

This depends on the look you want to achieve. A single, large statement piece is a confident, bold choice that creates an immediate and uncluttered focal point. It’s a simple way to make a high-impact design statement. A gallery wall is more personal and eclectic, allowing you to tell a story by combining various pieces. It’s a fantastic way to fill a large wall and showcase more of your personality.

You have two great strategies. The first is the complementary approach: choose a piece of art that contains one or two of the colors already present in your room (from your cushions, rug, or furniture). This creates a harmonious, pulled-together feel. The second is the contrast approach: use a bold piece of art to introduce a completely new accent color into a neutral room. This creates a dynamic and exciting focal point.

The difference is all about texture and finish. Our fine art paper prints have a smooth, non-reflective matte surface that is perfect for capturing crisp details, sharp lines, and photographic realism. They are typically framed behind glass. Our canvas prints have a beautiful, woven texture that adds depth and a more painterly, organic quality to the art. They are often framed without glass, which eliminates glare and creates a more immediate, gallery-style feel.

The “right” art is the art that you love. Trends will come and go, but a piece that you have a personal, emotional connection to will bring you joy every single day. Don’t worry about what you should like. Browse until a piece stops you in your tracks and makes you feel something. That’s the one. The goal is to create a home that is a true reflection of you, and the art on your walls is the most personal part of that story.
